Introduction

2017 Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma has become the market leader in the mid-size truck class. The Tacoma combines the trusted durability of the Toyota brand with outstanding off-road capabilities, resulting in a package that is hard to say no to.

The Toyota Tacoma cuts an impressive figure with its well thought out design, strong on-street vibe, and aggressive stance. This truck has been truly built to last. The Tacoma has a well-appointed interior design that rounds out a complete package for daily use as well as for off-road driving adventures.

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma is a durable truck that will never disappoint you. Its legitimate off-road capabilities and power make it a mean machine that can handle all kinds of rough terrain. The Tacoma is equipped with superb suspension, an impressive traction control system, and high-quality tires that blow away almost all of the competition out there.

Out of the six models of the Toyota Tacoma, two have been made exclusively to perform well on rough terrain. The TRD Off-Road gives an unbeatable performance with the help of its specially designed shocks, knobby tires, locking rear differential, off-road traction control system, and crawl control.

The Tacoma TRD Pro is back for 2017, and it has all the features of its predecessors plus improvements such as big-bore Fox internal shocks, a higher and wider stance, and an extra flexible suspension that help it exceed all performance charts when it comes to traversing terrain. Its raucous performance extends to the pavement as well, where the 2017 Toyota Tacoma can offer a smooth and comfortable ride.

Toyota has introduced a few other changes to the 2017 model, such as the addition of power sliding rear windows. The big news, though, is the return of the Tacoma TRD Pro, which you can see in action at Riley Toyota in Jefferson City.

Trim Level and Features

Toyota has expanded the Tacoma lineup in 2017. The base SR model is a plain work truck, while the SR5 is designed to provide better value and more options to buyers. The TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road are designed for handling rough roads and terrain. The Limited model is considered to be a better machine if you’re planning on spending most of your time on the tarmac. Of course, the reintroduced TRD Pro model is a very capable off-road vehicle that is now equipped with even better features than ever before.

Let’s start with the Toyota Tacoma SR. The SR is the most basic model of the Tacoma. It is designed to be a work truck with few expensive things in the cabin or on the exterior that might get damaged. Therefore, the features on the SR trim are quite limited. Buyers can choose either a 6.1-foot extended bed or a 5-foot crew cab body style. The SR is available in 2WD or 4WD. It is equipped with a 2.7-liter engine that is capable of generating 159 HP. The 4-cylinder engine can be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. If you are looking for more power than a 3.5-liter, a V6 engine is also available that can dish out 278 HP with the automatic transmission.

The SR model has a unique exterior that makes it easily identifiable. The Tacoma’s steel wheel measuring 16 inches and a dark grille adds a unique persona. Other notable features on the SR model include a durable bed, sliding rear windows, movable cleats, rearview camera, adjustable 4-way driver seat, steering wheel with telescoping and tilting feature, Bluetooth support, and a basic Entune sound system. The optional features include remote access and adaptive cruise control.

The SR5 is equipped with an identical engine to the SR but it is paired with 6-speed automatic transmission. Regarding the exterior, the Tacoma gets chromed back bumpers and a chrome accented charcoal grille. Other features include fog lights, steel wheels measuring 16 inches, remote access, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear windows with privacy glass, 4.2-inch touchscreen, Entune audio system, smartphone compatible navigation system, satellite radio, and Siri voice control.

The TRD Sport model is available only in a crew cab with a 6.1-foot bed. The TRD is only available with a V6 engine. The 2WD models rely on a 6-speed automatic transmission while 4WD versions can be equipped with an automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. Other unique features on the Tacoma include alloy wheels measuring 17 inches, body-colored bumper and fender, hood scoop, power outlet, and power rear windows. In the automatic transmission model, buyers also get smart entry and pushbutton ignition features. The TRD Tacoma is equipped with an Entune audio system, navigation system, and a 7-inch touchscreen.

The TRD Off-Road has a similar configuration, body style, and features as the TRD Sport. From the visual aspect, the TRD Off-Road instead has a chromed back bumper and a black flared texture on the fender. The hood scoop has been removed from the TRD Off-Road. It is instead equipped with 16-inch all-terrain alloy tires, extra skid plates, locking rear differential, high-quality shocks, a premium off-road traction system, and crawl control.

Additional features such as auto climate control, sunroof, ventilated seats, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, JBL Speakers, and a subwoofer can also be added to TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road with optional packages.

The 2017 Tacoma’s Limited model is designed specifically for concrete roads and tarmac streets. All the extra off-road features of the TRD models have been removed to create a smoother and streamlined driving experience in the city. It is shipped with a V6 engine and a crew cab body style with small bed. Like other models, it is available in 2WD or 4WD configuration. It has a more lavish interior that is decked out in leather. All the standard non off-road features of the TRD Sport are also included in the Limited model.

The TRD Pro model is only available in crew cab body style with a small bed. It is shipped with a 4WD V6 engine configuration. Buyers have the option of choosing between either an automatic or manual transmission. It has a unique front grille with the Toyota logo, black textured fenders, and LED foglights. It is equipped with 16-inch wheels, 2.5-inch Fox shocks, hood scoop, traction management system, luxurious interior, ventilated seats, uniquely textured interior, and a distinct shift knob.

Performance

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma can sit on a 3.5-liter V6 engine that was improved in 2016. The included V6 is one of the most powerful and fuel efficient 4-cylinder engines on the market. It packs ample power and performs exceptionally well on challenging roads. The excellent power and fuel efficiency have made this V6 an in-demand engine for trucks.

The V6 is able to generate an impressive 278 HP and 256 lb-ft of torque. Its excellent power gels perfectly with the 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. The automatic transmission has been tuned to perfection to work with Tacoma’s super powered V6 engine. The automatic transmission models have brilliant downshift and upshift capabilities. Not surprisingly, the automatic transmission system is much more popular than the manual system.

The 2.7-liter inline-4 is the standard in base models. It is able to generate a commendable 159 HP and 180 lb-ft of torque. The 4WD configuration is available with a manual 5-speed transmission system. All other 4-cylinder models have a 5-speed automatic transmission system.

Styling

The 2017 Tacoma does not blend into the crowd, with its new higher hood line and beefier front fascia. It has a masculine profile that makes it look unstoppable. The TRD Pro has a 1-inch taller stance compared to the TRD Off-Road model. Certain models such as TRD Pro feature black tires that add a certain further strength to the car’s facade.

The Tacoma lineup has adopted a more refined look by ditching offset wheel wells and huge fender flares. The 2017 body has a more proportional style that lends the Tacoma better stability and control.

In the back, the Tacoma’s back plate merges into the tailgate, creating a highly appealing look. A 3-piece bumper with side covers and fiberglass reinforcement adds further durability to the exterior.

The interior has largely remained unchanged but Toyota has introduced certain detailing to make the interior pop. The beautiful textures and surface material used in the Tacoma give it a refined, comfortable, and luxurious look.

Safety

The IIHS awarded the Tacoma in 2017 a “Good” safety rating in moderate frontal impacts. It earned a medium strength rating for the roof. In side impact tests, the Tacoma was able to earn a “Good” rating. The Tacoma is equipped with additional safety features in the form of antilock brakes, daytime running lights, and stability control.

The 2017 Tacoma is also equipped with front, rear, and front seat airbags to provide additional safety in case of a crash. It also has side airbags to protect the driver against impacts from the side.

The combination of quality safety features, great performance, and a good looking interior has made the 2017 Toyota Tacoma one of the most beloved vehicles on the market.
