2018 Toyota Camry Review

A new level of excitement. This is what Toyota aims to achieve with the latest generation Camry. After almost half a century of working with the same great recipe, Toyota hopes to increase its market share with an even better Camry.

It’s a Brand-New Camry

Currently in its 8th generation, the 2018 Toyota Camry is the first model that doesn’t feature a redesign of the older platform. Instead, engineers and designers worked the sedan from top to bottom, creating a completely new vehicle. For the past 15 years, the Camry was the best-selling sedan in Australia and United States. Until now, the vehicle only witnessed calculated changes in powertrain and suspension and even fewer changes on the exterior. But since the trend of family cars starts to switch from sedans to crossovers and entry-level SUVs, it was time for the Japanese manufacturer to switch to a completely new design that telegraphs emotion to the user.

For 2018, Toyota proposes 5 trims and 3 power units on the Camry sedan. Taking into account all possible combinations of engines and trims, the end buyer can choose between 10 different faces.

Exterior Design

The outer design is the first area where the 2018 Toyota Camry scores high points. According to many independent sources, the new Camry looks longer, wider and with a lower stance. The lines and angles are attractive to the eye and the large grille gives a note of sportiness on all models.

On the higher-end trims (XE and SXE) an additional lip spoiler is added to the trunk, the front-end grille is replaced and a new rear bumper is added. Drivers looking for a classic, professional style will be fond of the lower trims with fewer design cues while the higher trims will draw enchant the eyes of younger or more style-conscious prospective buyers.

It is worth noting that the only clue of a hybrid powertrain under the hood in the 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid is the blue tinted front logo. Apart from that, the exterior is identical to the internal combustion engine variants.

Interior Features

From the driver’s seat, the first thing that jumps out is the rebuilt dashboard that better focused on the driver. All controls are easy to reach and operate, especially given the large center console. The combination of buttons and touchscreen elements is a joy to use, offering the best of both worlds.

The 2018 Camry brings a front seat comfort level above its pay grade. All versions except the base L trim come with height adjustable seats, a particularly useful feature since the overall seating height has been dropped with the new design.

Moving on to the rear seats, headroom has been considerably improved. While the base model does not offer dual climate control, climbing the trim ladder provides rear vents along with other benefits: a panoramic sunroof, leather seats (also available in a very bright red) and a JBL premium surround sound system.

The Japanese automaker offers its own Smartphone pairing system (Entune 3.0), that is efficient and unique.

Powertrain Configurations

All 2018 Toyota Camry trims are available with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that pushes 203 hp and 186 lb-ft through the standard 8-speed automatic gearbox. Interestingly, the XE and SXE top trims gain 2 hp on the same engine configuration.

Also, the same higher-end trims are optionally available with the more powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine (301 hp, 267 lb-ft) coupled to the same 8-speed gearbox.

The hybrid powertrain is available on the top three trims and consists of a 2.5-liter gas unit accompanied by an electric motor, summing up to 208 hp. This time, as expected, the continuous variable transmission is enforced. There’s a Sport button to generate better throttle response at the expense of fuel efficiency. In normal running conditions, the 2018 Toyota Camry hybrid rates 51/53 mpg (city/highway). The battery has now been shifted from the trunk to under the rear seats, improving cargo space.

Furthermore, the suspension has witnessed a major overhaul, making the 2018 Camry the most stable and road efficient model to date. Current improvements have raised the Camry to well above the segment average.

With a complete rebuild both on the inside and the outside, the 2018 Toyota Camry brings on an emotional design which sticks in the mind of test drivers. The interior, while actually slightly reduced in size, also brings in huge improvements in terms of dashboard and seating. Given the high number of trims and options, Toyota brings plenty of configuration options to the lineup. Comfort addicts will enjoy the silence and above-average fuel economy of the hybrid drive while more performance-oriented drivers can benefit from the upgraded V6 unit.
